Technical Assistant - Emmerdale
UK-Yorkshire & Humberside-Leeds
Emmerdale is one of ITV’s most successful long running drama series, regularly pulling in viewing figures of over 7 million. We are currently looking for a Technical Assistant to provide support to our sound department.

As one of our Technical Assistants, you will provide first line technical support for our Sound Department and Production in acquiring the best possible sound whilst filming on location and in the studio.

You will have gained experienced working with a wide range of technology including (for example) cables, microphones, Fisher booms, fishpoles and radio microphones and have a strong credit list, which includes drama production, to demonstrate this.

We will look to you to be flexible, reliable, punctual and organised, you must also be passionate about development and extending your knowledge.  You will thrive in a fast paced environment and will be confident in liaising with various individuals and departments in a professional manner.  Due to the nature of the role, you will be required to be flexible with regards to working hours - production days are long and this is a manual handling role. Driving duties are also part of this role.

Emmerdale is recorded both in a studio, working with Fisher booms and fishpoles in a multi-camera environment and out on location where you will be required to operate fishpoles during the recording of scenes.  In addition you will have to drive a van between Base and Locations; rig and derig specialised sound equipment both before and after the shoot begins.

This is very much an entry level position into the Sound Department and we are looking for self-motivated individuals eager and ready to learn and pursue a career in Sound.

Our people are our greatest asset and, as an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds to work both in front of and behind the cameras.

Cary Grant
donated his entire salary of $100,000 from Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) to the U.S. War Relief Fund, adjusted for inflation this is equivalent to approximately $1,320,000.

James Dean told multiple people that he did not expect to live past 30. When discussing the risk involved in racing cars, he said: “What better way to die? It’s fast and clean and you go out in a blaze of glory.” Tragically this is how his ended at the youthful age of 24.

Steve McQueen was the original bad boy, his mother was a prostitute and his father a circus stuntman who regularly beat him during his childhood. He joined a gang and was sent to reform school for stealing hubcaps.

Marlon Brando was present at Martin Luter King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech and stated "I feel that those who take active part in demonstrations for equality and freedom are the heroes of our time."

Fred Astaire's first screen test evaluation went a little something like this “Can’t act. Can’t sing. Balding. Can dance a little.”

Errol Flynn also found success as a writer. He authored two novels, several articles, and an autobiography, "My Wicked, Wicked Ways".

William Powell's interest in all things theatrical blossomed to cover many areas in high school - glee club, drama club, public speaking, cheerleading, even illustrations for his 1910 and 1911 school yearbooks.

Gene Kelly made cinema history when he danced alongside Jerry the Mouse in Anchors Aweigh (1945), the viewer experiences the tale through a mixture of live action and animation.

Peter Sellers' first career in show business was as a drummer.

Buster Keaton was known as "The Great Stone Face" for his ability to get big laughs out of his relentlessly blank expression in silent film comedies like The Saphead (1920), Sherlock, Jr. (1924), and his famous The General (1927).

Burt Lancaster hoped to be a gym teacher and became involved with gymnastics. Lancaster left college early in his sophomore year and joined a circus with his friend Cravat. They earned three dollars a week as acrobats.

Humphrey Bogart is distantly related to the late Princess Diana, through her American relations.

Gloria Swanson was an early health food advocate who was known for bringing her own meals to public functions in a paper bag.

18 Secrets of a TV & Film Extra

3/11/2016

1. If we’re working on a big project you’ll sure as hell hear about it.

Picture
Well we won't tell you because its secret but we might drop a few hints.

2.We think 7 am is a generous lie in.

Picture
We love being on set, but that 4am alarm does make us question it.

3. We have to ask to pee.

Picture
It sometimes feels like you're back at school... but its the coolest school in the world.

4. We lie about who ate the biscuits.

Picture
“It wasn’t  me” we say as we skulk off with pockets and socks stuffed with custard creams, bourbons and digestives.

5. Bodily functions always try to escape when it’s “quiet on set”

Picture

6. And when it does everyone looks at you like it's the end of the world.

Picture

7. No matter how fast you get to the dining bus, you still have to wait.

Picture

8. Waking up in make-up after a night out is nothing compared to coming home in a full zombie prosthetic.

Picture
Nothing makes you feel more like a famous actor than every passerby staring at you in the streets, its not until you get home and look in the mirror that you remember that huge rubbery gash plastered to your face.

9. There’s always one Extra who thinks they’re an A-Lister.

Picture
If you’ve never experienced one, its you.

10. You go alone but always leave with a new friend.

Picture

11. Your opinion of the lead actors depends on whether they speak to you or not.

Picture

12. You can’t talk by the end of the day.

Picture
You go to set with the intent of finishing that long overdue book, but end up talking to so many people that at the end of the day your throat is as dry as Jack Dee's sense of humour.

13. Its like a battleground when people start talking about their agencies or future projects.

Picture

14. We rush everything only to wait 8 hours to actually do something and even then only your elbow makes the final cut.

Picture
15. But the next time you film you’re given a line and you feel like a pro.

Picture

16. Even when you’ve done nothing all day it still feels like a full days work.

Picture

17. The 12-hour days can make you feel like giving up and you have to convince yourself otherwise

Picture

18. But you’d do it a thousand times over just for the feeling when you wrap.
